During a therapy session, while talking to her psychologist, Eve White covers her face with her hands and is confronted with a severe headache. When she looks up, Dr. Luther meets the second personality of Eve Black who flirts with him and asks him to go dancing. She tells him Black is her maiden name, she is not married, and Bonnie is not her child. Eve Black lets her hair down, takes off her stockings, because she is allergic to nylon, smokes a cigarette, and complains the office is too hot. When questioned by the doctor, Eve Black says she likes to sing and dance at nightclubs after having a few drinks and the next morning she gives Eve White the hangover. She explains that Eve White doesn’t know anything about her, but she knows everything about Eve White. While using hypnosis, Dr. Luther meets the third personality, Jane, who remembers being forced to kiss her dead grandmother goodbye when she was six years old. The traumatic childhood experience is the key to multiple personalities emerging as a means of self-protection in handling the stress. On September 17, 1953, when Dr. Luther is able to bring out the repressed childhood memories, Jane, who had no memories, can now remember her past. Also, both the Eve White and Eve Black personalities die that day. Racism in United State Correctional Facilities Free Online Research Papers Today there are over 2 million Americans incarcerated in our jails and prisons. More than one half of them are black men and women. For many years racial discrimination has been a problem that is deeply-rooted in our criminal justice system. Racial discrimination is the result of unethical practices that were never properly addressed and fixed. These practices include racial profiling, disparity practices, unethical police behavior, and prosecutorial misconduct (St. Hilaire 1). This has caused overcrowding in our correctional facilities and has lead to increased racial tension within. Initially racial discrimination was factored in a legal model where race was used to control the rights of individuals. These practices continued on through the civil war and led to the introduction of the Jim Crow laws in 1876 (St. Hilaire 1). According to criminologist Robert Staples, the criminal justice system was founded by whites to safeguard their own â€Å"interests†. He also found that ninety percent of crimes committed by blacks never went to trial, and the alleged criminals were convicted without due process (St. Hilaire 1). In 1985 Cornell Law professor Sheri Lynn Johnson studies a dozen mock-jury trials, some cases had white defendants and other had African American defendants. She concluded that â€Å"race of the defendant significantly affects the determination of guilt.† She also found that white jurors were more likely to find a black defendant guilty than a white defendant even though the trials were based on the same crime and the same evidence. She c oncluded that attributing guilt on the basis of race was a subconscious decision (St. Hilaire 2). In today’s society incarceration rates are the highest they have ever been. With 2 million Americans currently incarcerated with one million of them being African American our jails and prisons are filling rapidly. For a variety of reason violent crime dramatically increased during the 1960s and 1970s, mostly in urban areas, leading to a much stronger stand against crime in the late 70s. Because of this the federal expenditure for law enforcement greatly increased, law enforcement officers were given greater discretion in suppressing crime (Marable 1). Many argue that this is the beginning of the profound racial discrimination in the criminal justice system today. Behind the anti-crime standpoint was a subtle racial undertone, a projection of stereotypes that linked blacks to crime (Marable 1). Along with the increase of federal money came the rapid expansion of personnel in the criminal justice system, as well as the construction of many new prisons (Marable 1). From 1871 to 1981 New York had opened 33 state pens. From 1982 to 1999 38 state pens were constructed (Marable 1). As of December 1989 the United States prison population had reached one million for the first time, an incarceration rate of one out of every 250 citizens (Marable 1). But by the early 1990s rates of violent crime began to plummet but the incarceration rate continued to climb. The vast majority of the new prisoners were non-violent offenders convicted mostly of drug charges (Marable 2). In New York African Americans and Latinos made up 25% of the total prison population but by 1999 they comprised 83% of all state prisoners and 94% of all drug related offenders (Marable 2). Currently African Americans nationally make up 75% of all incarcerated drug offenders (Marable 2). Today the racial proportions of those under some form of correctional supervision, including jail, prison, probation, and parole are jaw-dropping; one in fifteen white males, one in ten Latino males, and one in three for African American males (Marable 2). Statistically one out of every eight black males will be arrested in their lifetime (Marable 2). The costs of this racially discriminated criminal justice system are through the roof. It currently costs an average of $70,000 to construct a typical prison cell and $25,000 annually to supervise and maintain each prisoner (Marable 2). However there is a cost of this system that is even more devastating than the financial aspect. It has created a racial stereotype of African Americans as being violent, aggressive, hostile, and short-tempered. Therefore â€Å"black crime† is associated with violent crime. These stereotypes greatly influence whites’ judgment about crime because â€Å"black crime† does not make people think about tax evasion, embezzlement, or other types of white collar crime (Marable 2). This racial bias has been well established, especially in capital cases where killers of white victims are far more likely to receive the death sentence than those who murder African Americans (Marable 3). Prison is also a breeding ground for racial biases and stereotypes. It is a place where extreme bigotry is all around (Jones 1). Once a person has entered prison identifying with a group can mean the difference between life and death. While some inmates are drawn together by a common hometown or type of crime the most common alliances are forged on the lines of ethnicity and race, with hostility toward those who do not belong (Jones 1). Criminologists say they believe that racial disturbances will increase as prisons become more crowded and sentences get longer; a trend that has been continuing for the past few decades. But the racism in jails is at first not about a racist ideology or hatred for one race. First it is about protection, and then comes power, and as your relationship with one group continues you eventually buy into their ideologies (Jones 1). Racial discrimination is the result of unethical practices that have never been fixed and so continue to haunt our criminal justice system till this day. This has lead to racial sterotypes and biases that are both unethical and unequal and a system that is supposed to be just for everyone. It has also lead to the overcrowding of our prisons and the highest incarceration rates ever. For many including myself the racialized prison industrial complex is the great moral and political challenge of our time (Marable 2). This example shows why participation rates might be different in particular regions for varying complex reasons. 2. Concern has been expressed at the existence of latent entrepreneurial talent. For example, why are there so few successful female entrepreneurs Again this remains open question which appears to have no simple solution but rather is caused by a complex combination of social and economic reasons. Little research has been conducted specifically on these groups in the UK, although a study carried out by the David Deakins and Ram (3) with African - Caribbean entrepreneurs suggests that motivations among this minority group in the UK consists of a combination of positive (pull) and negative (push) factors. Positive factors are associated with the attractions of entrepreneurship and negative factors are associated with limited opportunities in the inner-city and deprived urban environments. 3. Attention has focused on the role of networks in successful entrepreneurial development. For example, some research suggests that inter-firm networks contribute to successful entrepreneurship as discussed below. Start-ups (4): We know that a high proportion of new firms fail within three years of start - up. Everyone Is Entitled To Their Own Opinion On December 10, 1948 the General Assembly of the United Nations proclaimed the Universal Declaration of Human Rights Following this significant act the Assembly called upon all Member countries to announce the text of the Declaration, read and expounded principally in schools and other educational institutions, without difference based on the political status of countries or territories. So the question, if everyone is entitled to their own opinion could find ease answer in the article 19, in which is stated that Everyone has the right to freedom of opinion and expression; this right includes freedom to hold opinions without interference and to seek, receive and impart information and ideas through any media and regardless of frontiers.(David Weissbrodt and Connie de la Vega , p102) This universal declaration of human right set a worldwide standard of achievement for all people and all nations, to the end that every human being and every organ of society, keeping this Declaration constantly in mind, and make every effort by teaching and encourage respect for these rights and freedoms , nationally and internationally, to secure their universal and effective recognition and observance, both among the people of Member States themselves and among the people of territory under their influence. Definitely the recognition of equal and inalienable rights of all members of the human family is the underpinning of freedom, peace and justice in the world. We can confirm that wherever, either in the past or in the present time or future there is the absence of such status we will always experience result of barbaric acts. And when they do, we need to stand up and strongly criticise those dangerous actions and be critical of the beliefs which lead to those actions. Now again, we are not talking about outlawing those dangerous opinions and beliefs, but we are talking about being critical of those opinions and beliefs. We could be supportive to the ACLU (American Civil Liberty Union) when they protected the KKK (Ku Klux Klan) for their right to march- demo peacefully. But if they wanted to march peacefully in our cities, maybe we would be on the sidelines being very critical of their beliefs and against those views. In our analysis however, no opinions should be above criticism. We believe in the marketplace of ideas and in that bazaar all opinions and beliefs are welcome and should be similarly open to criticism. We all, not only criticise other peoples opinions every day, but no one would argue that it was immoral to express opinion or to criticise them. No one has a difficulty criticising what Hitler did to the Jews. Nor do people have concern in criticising the KKK for their views, or that Tom Cruise is constantly criticised for his religious viewpoint and so for the majority of Christians, Jews and Muslims that usually are underlined with criticism for their opinion .Of course the moment anyone criticises opinion and beliefs, we will have attempt to over dramatise the criticism with claims of intolerance and/or hate. Insinuations are made that their free speech is being taken away; creating a big misunderstanding of what really is freedom of opinion. Then to avoid such misunderstanding we should analyse the ramification of the different aspect of opinion, to fully appreciate the importance of a word and knowledge and how we could make the best use out of it. We could start doing so by using a philosophical approach. Now if we think that Philosophy is the pursuit of wisdom, we know that opinion and supposition are inconsistent with logic. There is no hesitation in thinking, that philosophy provides the practice of scientific reasoning, and so the knowledge of things and their causes, through reason and dialogue. It is a way of comprehending what is factual and what is correct by focusing on rational understanding and analysis, or simply what makes sense. So once we establish this concept we can move on to the second approach, in which , principles travel the opposite way of the first approach ,but worthy to be taken under consideration .So we will look at the expression of opinion under intellectual point of view and, if it should be voiced freely by any individual . We can say that an Intelligent person whether his opinion is based on fact or not, will make the difference. Already, for someone to have his opinion makes the biggest difference. An educated person has an opinion on any matter; .and can give a plausible answer on any question. The reply does not have to be exact, or even precise, but an individual must have some opinion to discuss on the subject. Thus, it is not indispensable to know the facts in order to express an opinion; an opinion may even be entirely unsupported in an argument. So also examining the expression of opinion under academic view, we can confirm that any one is entitled to their own opinion, especially those individuals with a particular cultural preparation, since, we know that if an opinion is not founded on demonstrated and valid information, it is irrelevant. Of course we can argue that, on a certain extend, because if we do consider the examination of relativity of the opinion, we would find a different prospective. In the language of relativity, everyone is accurate. Possibly from their particular point of view, everyone is in the situation of believing that they have accurately determined the order of events. However, we know that it is not possible for everyone to be right. For example If everyone has a diverse opinion about which is the best classical painter of all time in the world it may not be possible to determine finally who is correct, and so we may be tempted to say that they are both entitled to their opinion or point of view. So entitled or not, the best painter is by designation only one , and the opinions of all but one admirer are wrong, even though its not possible to say whose opinion is correct .At this point it will be important to examine the understanding of true in believing the opinion. Everyone should have the independence to seize their own beliefs and the freedom to attempt convincing others of the truth of those beliefs and opinions. But as we know, not all beliefs can in fact be equally true. If you believe that a painting completed by Mr Jones is superior than the one done by Michelangelo, or that someone says that the summer in Egypt is warmer than the one in Italy and we believe it is wrongly the way around , we could both be wrong , but we can not both be right. If we believe the Mount Etna is an Active volcano, and you believe that it is not, we can not both be right. When it comes to the difference between an active volcano or not, we can not say everyone is entitled to their own opinion. Moderately, we look at the proofs and facts, and try to outline whose opinion is really right. Clearly before expressing opinion we should examine the possible evidence, and not dismiss the case without even looking at it. So it is important before believing in particular opinion the examination of evidence. So, trying to understand, how we could become different from the kind of person who would ignore the evidence, and still believe in his own opinion. And in doing so we may encounter the examination of the probable opinion, philosophically well illustrated by Bertrand Russell: What we strongly believe, if it is true, is called knowledge, provide d it is either intuitive or indirect (logically or psychologically) an intuitive knowledge from which it follows logically. What we firmly believe, if it is not true, is called error. What we firmly believe, if it is neither knowledge nor error, and also what we believe undecided, because it is, or is derived from, something which has not the main extent of self-evidence, may be called probable opinion. Thus the larger part of what would regularly pass as knowledge is more or less probable opinion. A body of individually probable opinions, if they are mutually rational, become more probable than any one of them would be individually. It is in this way that many scientific hypotheses obtain their probability. They fit into a coherent system of probable opinions, and thus become more probable than they would be in isolation. The same thing applies to general philosophical hypotheses. Often in a single case such hypotheses may appear extremely doubtful, while yet, when we consider the order and coherence which they introduce into a mass of probable opinion, they turn into almost certain. Short Story about Old Woman

In a large town there was an old woman who sat in the evening alone in her room thinking how she had lost first her husband, then both her children, then one by one all her relations, and at length, that very day, her last friend, and now she was quite alone and desolate. She was very sad at heart, and heaviest of all her losses to her was that of her sons; and in her pain she blamed God for it. She was still sitting lost in thought, when all at once she heard the bells ringing for early prayer. She was surprised that she had thus in her sorrow watched through the whole night, and lighted her lantern and went to church. It was already lighted up when she arrived, but not as it usually was with wax candles, but with a dim light. It was also crowded already with people, and all the seats were filled; and when the old woman got to her usual place it also was not empty, but the whole bench was entirely full. And when she looked at the people, they were none other than her dead relations who were sitting there in their old-fashioned garments, but with pale faces. The Basketball Subculture Essay example - 1095 Words

Introduction In this analysis I will cover the different aspects of sport subculture and what it means to be a recognizable member within a group. I will give examples of what it means to be a part of such subcultures. For example, shared ways of dressing, group status and credibility, as well as some of the groups norms and rituals. The specific group I will discuss will be my basketball team and the role I play within it. Because my team is at highly competitive level, our norms may be unlike to other teams’ especially those of less competitive teams. Then within these big three brands there are Kobe’s, LeBron’s, and Durant’s which are all under Nike, and D-Rose which is under Adidas. These of course are all big name professional basketball players who put out their own shoes under the brand they are sponsored by. Other than shoes basketball players also follow those brands for casual and practice wear such as hoodies, t-shirts, socks, sweats or track pants, and athletic shorts. However, as mentioned in Wheaton’s article â€Å"Just Do It,† you could be labeled as a poser if you don’t have the credibility of being a part of that subculture. One of the biggest tell tale signs that can distinguish between players and posers is whether or not they only wear their basketball shoes on the court. In this situation â€Å"posers† can be identified when wearing basketball certain shoes outside or casually. Credibility on the court comes a lot with age and experience. In order to gain credibility one either needs to be very skilled or play at an elite level. At the college level everyone is pretty knowledgeable of each other within their league. Even within my own team there is status and credibility, it generally is dependant on seniority and skill level.
